Do you want to provide someone a “hand up in life, instead of a hand out”? Do you believe in giving people another chance? Do you believe no one should go hungry? Each year we advocate for these issues through Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. This is an annual program where people come together across the city to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness.
The St. Francis House will hold the Fourth Annual Walk a Mile in My Shoes event on Saturday, November 21, 2020. The walk begins at the memorial for the homeless in our community, located at 6th Street and the Big Sioux River behind the LSS Center for New Americans building (300 E. 6th St), and concludes at the St. Francis House, located at 210 N Sherman Ave.
Registration and check in for the walk begins begins at 10:30 a.m. At 11 a.m. there will be a short program at the memorial before participants begin the 1-mile walk to the St. Francis House.
Because of COVID-19 concerns, we will practice social distancing during the event.
Please join us in raising awareness of hunger and homelessness by providing a new or gently-used backpack filled with 15 pounds of essential items. We encourage walkers to carry the backpack during the walk. Backpacks will be collected at the end of the walk.
Here is a list of items that can be included in your backpack:
If you will not be participating in the walk, you can drop off a backpack at the St. Francis House daily from 8 am - 8 pm. When you arrive at the house, please call 605-334-3879 ext. 2 let us know you are here. We will send someone out to your vehicle to collect the backpack(s).
Many of our guests arrive with just a backpack filled with all their possessions, with many not having proper shoes to wear. So, for just one day, let’s walk a mile in their shoes.

The walk will culminate in the St. Francis House parking lot, behind the house. Cookies, coffee, hot chocolate and water will be available.
